Game 1: 7/6/21, 7:10 PM (Yankees win 12-1)

New York cruises along to a lopsided 12-1 victory in game 1 of their West coast trip. Yankee starter Jameson Tallion, tossed his best start of the season throwing 7 innings of 1 run ball, allowing 5 hits and striking out 9. He sailed along and was in full control for the entire game. Hopefully that’s a sign of things to come!

The offense decided to erupt, scoring a season high 12 runs. In addition, they have a season high in hits with 18. 6 Yankees providing multi-hit games. 8 out of 9 starters had at least 1 hit. The only player without a hit was unfortunately Gary Sanchez, but he still had a productive night with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. Giancarlo Stanton would get New York on top in a hurry with a 3-run bomb to the 2nd deck at T-Mobile Park. Yanks would tack on 3 more in the 2nd inning when Sanchez would draw a walk and Tim LoCastro would score, then Luke Voit would start his monster night, with a 2-run single to make it 6-0 New York. The offense wasn’t done yet, as another 2 runs would score in the 3rd inning on a DJ LeMahieu RBI single and Aaron Judge RBI double making it 8-0. Yanks would get another run in the 5th, courtesy of Voit who again hit an RBI single. Seattle would get 1 run back in the 6th on an awkwardly fielded ball by Miguel Andujar from Ty France that would score 1. That would be it for the Mariners offense. In the 8th, Yanks would put the icing on the cake when Rougned Odor crushed a ball to the 2nd deck scoring 3 to put a cap on the offensive outburst by the Bronx Bombers. Luke Voit had himself quite the night, going 5-6 and 3 RBIs and a run scored, his 1st career 5-hit game. The struggling Aroldis Chapman would come in to pitch the 9th in a non-save situation and would strand the bases loaded. Tallion would get the win for New York and Justus Sheffield would get the loss for Seattle, he was awful if you

didn’t realize.

Game 2: 7/7/21, 7:10 PM (Yankees win 5-4)

That’s 10 straight series wins in Seattle as the Yanks take game 2. Luke Voit would get the Yanks started with an RBI single scoring Judge followed by a Gleyber Torres 2-run single making it a quick 3-0 lead. Original Yankee starter Domingo German, made a very late scratch as he had a tooth problem to take care of. Yankees sent out Nick Nelson who was awful as expected, he walked the bases loaded and didn’t make it out of the 1st inning. His line: .2 innings, 0 H, 1 run, 3 BB, and 1 strikeout. Thankfully, Luis Cessa came in relief and fired 3.1 scoreless innings. In the 2nd, Judge would get his 2nd at bat in as many innings and smash a 2-run homer making it 5-2 New York. That would be all they needed as they would get shut out the rest of the way. 5 runs on 10 hits in a game is good so today was another good day for the Yankee offense that has really turned it up as of late. German would eventually return in the 5th inning and he served up a 3-run homer to Tom Murphy making it a slim 5-4 lead. All 3 runs were unearned to German, as they only scored due to a rare Gio Urshela error. Jonathon Loaisiga and Chad Green would pitch the final 2 innings and secure the win. Seattle all star pitcher, Yusei Kikuchi, was unexpectedly bad giving up 5 runs in 5 innings. He definitely settled in after the 5 runs in the first 2 innings. Kikuchi would get the loss for the Mariners and Luis Cessa would get the win after throwing 3.1 scoreless in middle relief.

Game 3: 7/8/21, 4:10 PM (Seattle wins 4-0)

Not much to say about this one, as the Yankees offense cooled down considerably getting shut out and having only 1 hit courtesy of Giancarlo Stanton. Yankee starter Jordan Montgomery was good, he started off really poorly serving up a solo homer to Kyle Seager in the 1st followed up by a 2-run shot by Dylan Moore in the 2nd. Otherwise he was consistent and kept the Yankees in the game. His final line: 6.2 innings, 3 runs, 4 hits, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. Justin Wilson would get the final out of the 7th and Wandy Peralta pitched the 8th and gave up a solo homer to Mitch Haniger. Montgomery would get the tough loss for New York. Seattle starter Logan Gilbert, was in cruise control the entire night allowing 1 hit over 7 shutout innings securing the win. Paul Sewald and Kendall Graveman would toss the final 2 scoreless.

My thoughts:

It is always nice to win a series no matter who the opponent is. Yanks needed a series win and also needed a lopsided victory like game 1. Love to see big clutch 2-out hits in both games 1 and 2. Disappointed to see no life in game 3 but you move on. They’ve struggled winning series sweeping games, which sucks.

What’s next?

The Seattle Mariners stay home for a 3 game set against their rival Los Angeles Angels, in the final series before the All-Star break. The Yankees travel to Houston, to take on the Astros in a 3 game set. New York and Houston have a ton of bad blood with each other as Houston had to cheat against them in the 2017 ALCS. These 2 teams absolutely hate each other and it’s a highly anticipated matchup. This is the 1st time Yankees are in Houston with fans since 2018. Last time these 2 teams met, was earlier this season in New York when the Yankee fans booed Houston players out of town when New York won the series. Should be a very intense series. Can’t wait!
