Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees: Series Recap

Writer: Melvin SanabriaMelvin Sanabria

Game 1: 6/28/21, 7:10 PM (Angels win 5-3)

New York’s offense would go silent against the worst pitching staff in baseball. Yanks have lost 4 straight and are flirting with a .500 record now. Yankees sent out Michael King, who once again gave them his usual 4.1 innings giving up 3 runs. King has been great all season, providing consistency. Yanks fell behind in the 1st when Shohei Ohtani smacked his 1st career homer at Yankee Stadium. New York would have 2 men on and only score 1 run in the bottom of the inning, pretty typical for this Yankee offense this season. The Bronx Bombers would tie the game at 2 in the 2nd inning with a Gio Urshela bomb to left field. The Angels would tack on another run in the 5th inning with an RBI groundout and an inning later they’d get another run on a solo homer by Juan Lagares to the right field bullpen. With New York down 4-2, Giancarlo Stanton would absolutely demolish a baseball that I don’t think has landed yet to make it a 4-3 game. That would be the closest the Yanks would get as they gave up another run in the 8th on an error by DJ LeMahieu who is a multiple time gold glover. The bullpen wasn’t bad but surely wasn’t dominant. Mike King would get the tough loss for the Yankees while Jose Suarez would get the win for Los Angeles.

Game 2: 6/29/21, 7:10 PM (Yankees win 11-5)

Finally, the Yankees actually score runs in this game to even up the series. New York would score 11 runs on 11 hits in a variety of ways. Yanks starter Jameson Tallion was awful but I guess you can say he did his job getting the win and eating innings. His final line of 5.1 innings, 9 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts is terrible but he kept the Yanks in the game. Yankees would get on the board quick with a solo blast from Gary Sanchez who has still been great lately getting his average to .240. Tallion would allow 2 runs in the 2nd inning on a Jose Iglesias 2-run dinger. The Bronx bombers would tack on 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, Brett Gardner would hit a sac fly to score Urshela, LeMahieu would rope an RBI single scoring Andujar and the bug blast would come off the bat of Aaron Judge launching a 2-run bomb. In the 3rd, Ohtani would blast another homer his 2nd of the series to make it a 5-3 Yankee lead. The New York offense was not done yet as they plated 5 more in the 4th as Andujar started it off with a solo shot to make it 6-3, Sanchez would drive in a run on a double scoring Gardner, Luke Voit would drive in Gary on a double and Gleyber Torres would rope a 2-run single making it a 10-3 Yankee lead. The following inning, Ohtani would hit his 2nd homer of the game, a 2 run blast to cut the deficit to 10-5. In the 6th, Andujar would like a double to the corner scoring Torres making it a 11-5 game and that would be it. Jameson Tallion would get the win and Andrew Heaney would get the loss for LA.

Game 3: 6/30/21, 7:10PM (Angels win 11-8)

I’m still in shock how the Yankees managed to lose this game. Starter Domingo German’s outing got cut short due to a long rain delay. He went 3 innings giving up 3 runs so he was awful in his 3 innings pitched. To start the game he would give up a 2 run homer to Phil Gosselin. Yankees would plate 7 runs in the 1st inning, Stanton would have an RBI single, Torres would also have an RBI single, Andujar would have an RBI groundout, Gardner would draw a bases loaded walk scoring Stanton, the big knock came off the bat off LeMahieu when he roped a bases clearing double scoring 3 making it a 7-2 lead in the 1st inning. Angels would get 1 back on a RBI double by Lagares. Then came the rain over an hour rain delay held this game up. Luis Cessa would come in after the delay and serve up a solo shot to Jared Walsh making the deficit 7-4. In the 7th, more rain came in with another long lengthy delay, total of 2 hours and 13 minutes of delays in this game. After the 2nd delay, in the 8th Gardner would hit a long solo homer making it a 8-4 lead, you would think this game is over but Angels had other plans. In the 9th, Chapman would give up 3 straight walks then give up a game tying grand slam to Jared Walsh. Unbelievable. Angels would tack on 3 more on a Luis Rengifo 2-run single and a Taylor Ward RBI double, disgusting. Lucas Leutge would get the loss and Mike Mayors would get the win for the Angels.

My thoughts:

It was nice to see Yankees start scoring a lot of runs in the final 2 games of the series. The Yankee pitching was awful and game 3 was the worst loss of the season by far, they led 7-2 and 8-4 at different times and still lost. Yanks were hot coming into the series and came back down to life losing the series. This was supposed to be a 4 game set by game 4 was postponed until August. Bad series for the Yanks hopefully they get back on track.

What’s next?

The Los Angeles Angels travel back home to take on the Baltimore Orioles for July 4th weekend. The New York Yankees stay home and take on the New York Mets in a huge July 4th weekend showdown. Bragging rights are on the line for both New York clubs.
